How well it holds up over time is still out but a nice overhaul to the Jebao style pumps.

All the reviews are coming back positive on this pump. If you are on a budget, this would top my list. All pond solutions are very good cheap wavemakers. Coral Box Quiet Pumps, reviewers state that they are very quiet power heads and inexpensive. A power head will give more of a straight thin surge of water where a wavemaker will give a wider slower surge. If all you really want is just a wavemaker then both options would work. If you really wanted something custom and unique to you, I would just ask the community and they would put it together for you and all you have to do is upload it. A wave maker is an electronic timer they can be hooked up to, that can switch them on and off in different parts of a reef tank to create the kind of 'changeable' water movement you get on a reef. Admittedly, the actual programming aspect is a little daunting and can be overwhelming at first, but you probably won't have to worry about it if you stick with the stuff that's already out there. The 'propeller-in-a-cage' is the powerhead.
WAVEMAKER VS POWERHEADS SOFTWARE
It's pretty easy to upload different software others have written.

If you wanted to take advantage of the second option I mentioned with 4 powerheads, or if you wanted to upload some new software to the controller, you will have to setup the environment on your computer to do so. Also, if you wanted to you could hook up 3 or 4 or 6 different powerheads to the RA and have each one on an independent wavemaker timer, that's an option too. As nouns the difference between wavemaker and powerhead is that wavemaker is (physics) an oscillating device that creates reproducible waves in a liquid while powerhead is the part of a machine that is the source of power. It kind of looks like the the JBJ unit drives both with the same timer. So you could set one powerhead to alternate on/off every 20 seconds and then the second one every 45 seconds if you wanted to. The RA software out of the box lets you configure two wavemaker pumps with independent timers. Click to expand. This is pretty much spot on.
